Clean Out Your Closet
As soon as you decide to put your house on the market, it’s time to start purging. Start with your closet. The old rule applies, if you haven’t worn it in a year, get rid of it. Donate your clothes to the local Goodwill or Salvation Army or other local charity. If you want to try to re-coup some of your moving costs, sell your items on sites local sites like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist or online sites like Poshmark or Mercari. This could take precious time that you do not have to photograph each item, and pack and ship it. Another option is to send your clothes to a service like Thread-Up. Thread-Up sells your clothes, but you do not have to take photos of each item. You print a label and mail your clothes in box or bag of your choosing. If the items sell online you can transfer the earnings to yourself. Of course, there is always the option of an old-fashioned garage sale!
Pair Down Furniture
After closets, start to look around at your furniture. Are there pieces you are ready to part with? Do all the pieces fit in your new place? If the answer is no, it’s time to purge them too. Once again you can sell them, give them to family or donate. Habitat for Humanity ReStore or Goodwill is a great option for furniture and fixtures that could be used in another home.
What Do You Need?
As you start to pack, take out of season clothes and use your suitcases to pack them away. Go through your seasonal decorations and donate what you do not need or would not put up in your new home.
Time to Move!
If you need a moving company – get three quotes. Be realistic about what you need to ensure the quote is accurate and you are not hit with hidden costs. Use a reputable company, not a moving broker to avoid a moving disaster.
Get boxes from grocery stores or friends or purchase them online through uline.com or locally through companies like U-Haul. Pack by category and put like items together. Don’t forget to label your boxes! Pack a separate tub of some cleaning supplies, paper plates, silverware, paper towels and toilet paper so you have easy access to these things once you move in.
